Thinking Out Loud
Under Understood Maritime Anthropology

Teknoantrop (Techno Anthropology) idea was easier to understand through this self-explaining logo (courtesy of Ir. Mathius J. Tamaela).
During Marine Industry Exhibition at World Trade Center Surabaya in 2001, I met Ir. Mathius J. Tamaela at Darma Persada University (Unsada) booth. The lecturer at the university introduced me to Maritime Anthropology concept. He lengthily explained on anthropology and techno anthropology.
Even though Ir. Tamaela was one of the dean at Unsanda, he hasn't been able to finish his Doctorate program. One of the reason is that it's difficult to find promoters who understand techno anthropology.
Anthropologists don't understand maritime studies, while maritime experts do not understand anthropology. Who would then promote and test his concept and let him finish his Doctorate study? We haven't been able to monitor the development of Unsanda's maritime study anymore.
Whether we realize it or not, the concept of maritime anthropology has been found as part of our every maritime problems. Human resources and maritime technology always become the stumbling blocks for us in the pursue of achieving success. The concept itself hasn't been tested and even though the Giga team would not know it better than any of you, we do interested in the concept.
The following is the outline of maritime anthropology which was introduced by Ir. Mathius J. Tamaela, head lecturer and Dean of Faculty of Maritime Technology, Darma Persada University:
MARITIME ANTHROPOLOGY
On Creation of Techno anthropology
Maritime anthropology is a science that use direct approach of anthropology in maritime technology by tracking the concepts of human activities in the creation of anthropological technology through engineering anthropology as the following:
I. Understanding anthropological activities in line with concepts of maritime anthropology while creating a plan.
II. Studying common human resources practices and tactics in building maritime technology.
III. Unleashing and positioning human resources creativities in line with their experience and knowledge acquired.
IV. Motivating and processing human resources to keep them open to new concepts of maritime technology.
V. Mastering maritime technology design and following engineering anthropology in creating a plan.
ANTHROPOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGY
Anthropological Technology is a science studying human resources activities in the development of technology, which is based on combining social sciences, natural sciences and technology into industrial engineering through:
I. Activity planning in technology by understanding and taken engineering anthropology into account.
II. Developing human resources by making it available and train them in the engineering knowledge needed.
III. Positioning human resources in place according to process design.
IV. Processing human resources activities within technology work system.
V. Designing through sequences of science and technology utilization in industrial engineering.
Whether the idea of Maritime Anthropology is applicable or not, it would depend on yourself, whether you would like to find out more about it or not. In fact the very idea itself was challenged by both engineers and anthropologists.
Who should take the first lead on this to make maritime anthropology applicable?
