The following website might help explain the reason: Political Activism in a Traditional and Colonial Society Indonesia between 1908 and 1928 (by Peter Lowensteyn) http://www.lowensteyn.com/indonesia/index.html |

There was an Indonesian pop song by Koes Plus (the Indonesian Beatles) which lyrics starts with 'Bukan lautan hanya kolam susu...' (literally: No ocean - only milk pond...) which represent how good living in Indonesia is. Actually the idea for the song came from the actual 'Kolam Susuk' (not exactly 'susu' which means 'milk') at Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Here, miracurolusly fishes and prawns litterally come over to you, as at the next line of the lyrics says... Kolam Susuk (Susuk Pond) at Belu Regency (courtesy of giga-mmh.org) Fishes and shrimps are abundant at the Susuk pond. Thanks to the pristine mangrove environment nearby (courtesy of giga-mmh.org) Video Gallery 7: Kolam Susu(k) and Shakira's Timor |

A visit to Sumba is a visit to a forgotten island with spectacular festivals, mysterious ritual, traditional villages, and high peaked houses surrounding impressive megalithic gravesites, unique hand-woven textiles and golden stretches of untouched beaches. Some may associate Sumba with its wild horses, but in fact most wild horses can be find only in the savanna at the Eastern part of the island. |

West Sumba is famous for its beautiful and untouched beaches. A five star hotel has been built in one of the beach and named Sumba as a 'destination for future tourism.' Besides its beaches, waterfalls are another main attraction in Sumba. One of them has spring in a deep cave nobody even dare to explore. |

As a cultural tourist you will start with an observation on how Sumbanese live at a glance. You will see them living in ethnic villages surrounded by stone walls neatly arranged in hills. This structure is the legacy of ancient communities with their tribal wars. |

Joget Bumbung is one of the various traditional dances in Bali. Joged Bumbung is comprised of bamboo resonators lying horizontally and tied to bamboo frames. These resonators are struck with special mallets made of bamboo and tire rubber. Often used for informal occasions, joged bumbung accompanies a dance where the woman invites the man to dance with her by placing a sash around his waist and pulling him into the dance circle. |

Traditional vessels in form of perahu (boat) or kapal (ship) can be found in almost any Indonesian coastline (boats are watercrafts smaller than ships). The local culture would influence both the sizes and shapes of these vessels. The most famous are vessels from South Sulawesi made by the Bugis, even though many vessels from other areas in Indonesia are also good enough for sailing in the high seas. |
